Is there any any way to restore the dates to SLQ like you can with buffalo nickels? I have about 3 rolls of dateless SLQs and about 6 that are variety 1.

    Thanks

I've just been digging up the same question, the only answer I can find is Nitric Acid. It's really nasty stuff and it has a so-so shot at working.

You don't need it to identify T1 SLQs, every Type 1 SLQ can be identified without looking for a date, any type 1 with a mint mark is a 1917, and the 1916 and 1917 Philadelphia coins have enough differences to be identified without visible dates.

Dateless 1916s can be slabbed, ANACS will do it for certain, possibly the other 2.

How can you tell the difference between the 1917 and 1916?

There's a few ways, a 1916 coin will only have one lock of hair at the back of Liberty's head, also look at the drapery next to her right foot, it's different than a 1917.

Her head is also closer to the rim on a 1916, I have cherrypicked dateless 1916s :D

    Looky there.

Do remember that the 1916 is outnumbered by the 1917 at a ratio of 168 to 1.

So do people still buy these dateless 1916 for a 1,000 dollars or are they not worth much at all.

YES THEY DO....A blank date 1916 is still a 1916 key date even though you can't see the numbers.

WOW!!! That would be some cherrypick then if people pay that much.

I would not sell any of my dateless ones for $1,000. Although, with the market being what it is, maybe that's all they are worth right now.:rolling:

Recent sales of dateless or very low grade SLQs were in the $1500-1800 range, I don't think that they are going to be as affected by the market crash, the 16 is the real stopper of the series for most collectors, lower priced ones sell very quickly.

Never bothered to certify them myself. Don't be surprised that you didn't find one.. 168 - 1 ratio and all.
