Agreed. The buttons look like typical mid-late 1700-1840s cast pewter and brass buttons the buttons at the top left and bottom right look like brass buttons from the first half of the 1800's. I have found a bunch metal detecting at colonial sites. Slave buttons or not, they are still cool historical pieces of history from this country's early days.

    Top left:
Brass flat button, 1800-1840. Backmarks most likely show maker or quality, typical of this time.

    Top right:
Cast pewter flat button, mid-late 1700's.

    Bottom left:
Cast pewter (livery) flat button, mid-late 1700's

    Bottom right:
Brass flat button, 1800-1840. Also shows backmarks

  6. So not slave buttons any idea on value or how to better describe

I will correct to pewter and appropriate date ranges

I have them on my site with stupid prices until ID with 40-80x magnification

Hard to say for value, I would say around $7 or so each, though someone else will probably pay more. I don't know much about pricing, I have found around 100 similar buttons metal detecting but never paid attention to any values or bought any.

I also assume back marks on the brass buttons says something along the lines of "GILT", talking about the gold plating that they once had. These buttons looks like they were dug, and the plating has worn off underground.

Yep, and when they do have any gilt it is usually minimum or starts to come off when cleaning the dirt off with water.

Well it's good to learn things! I humbly suggest to slow down on the buying unless you know what you're buying. ;)
