Allright I have a few coins that I think would be worth slabbing in the near future and I was wondering how much that would run me, and where the best place to send them to would be.
I submit coins to PCGS first because IF I have to sell, all things being equal, I realize more dollars then the other services. It is just the nature of the market. Don't believe me? Look up realized auction prices on eBay for the same coin in the same grade among the top grading companies. Also, check out auction houses like Heritage Galleries and Teletrade as well. You'll see. If you have a variety or error, I would submit it to ANACS because they do a great job with varieties, errors and problem coins (at least for now). Other services like NGC and ICG do a good job as well. I like ICG slabs with the Intercept Shield for ultimate slab protection of my coins. NGC has a great slab too and their prices come in 2nd behind PCGS. The rest of them I wouldn't bother. Each of these services can be found on the web: Here is the a good site with LINKS to them ALL: Grading Company LINKS Cost for these services depend how fast you want them back. Economy service can run as long as 3 months which costs about $12 to $18 per submission. 1 to 2 week services cost more and so forth. All prices are posted at their sites.
There are 4 Grading Co. worth your time... NGC/PCGS/ANACS/ICG....post the date and mintmark and grades and maybe we can suggest a little better on what one... They will run anywhere from $10 per coin to $25 per coin for slow service (1-3 months.) Speedy
IF the coins have not been cleaned, dipped, etc., I still would go with PCGS. If you want to be safe and you are not sure if they have been messed with, go with ANACS. Only ANACS will grade cleaned or dipped coins (as of today). PCGS, NGC and ICG will NOT grade these coins (but still charge you) and they will be returned in a 2 cent flip (hence the term, "body bagged"). How are the grades? That 38-D is a key date isn't it? Halfs are not my bag...sorry.
Right.... I would agree with that to a point....if you are looking to sell...go with PCGS or NGC...if you just want them for your collection NGC ANACS. I think more than that it is..is the coin worth it...I mean if the bust halves are low grade...there really isn't any point to grade them.....I don't think any of the dates are keys.....I don't think any of them are faked much...but I don't collect Bust Halves so I might be wrong. But if the Bust half is like a XF/AU I can see grading it. Speedy
Hey Midas I got to thinking....does PCGS list Overton numbers on their slabs??...I was thinking that if they don't I would want to send them someplace where I could get them looked at just in case. Speedy
Changing the look of the coin.....that can be hard to tell sometimes...it might not be seen my a un-aided eye..... The ONLY time when Acetone should be used is when PVC is on the coin or tape has been on the coin and it needs to come off......most people call Acetone cleaning and sometimes it can be seen on the coin. I don't care what it is...the softest cloth in the USA will leave marks of some kind.....any rubbing is bad.... Speedy
Cleaning can be defined as doing anything to remove anything from the surface of a coin. That includes wiping, rubbing or dabbing the surface of the coin with a cloth of any kind, Q-tips and even your fingers. It also includes placing the coin in any type of liquid, including water, acetone, coin dip, cleaning solutions - anything - for the purpose of removing something from the surface of the coin.
Never having done so personally I cannot say with absolute certainty. But I have been told by others I trust that yes they will. I have even been told that PCGS has dipped coins without being asked to do so. THAT would make me mad !!
I think if you can't say personally than you shouldn't say such a statement no matter how much you trust others. They might have a grip against PCGS. Others we trust let us down all the time!
PenguineMint another peice of info on these 4 TPG's mentioned by Speedy that may help you decide. (And one of my personal grips with PCGS and NGC) You can not submit coins to all these on your own. PCGS and NGC require you to join there whatever or go through an authorized dealer. ANACS will allow you to submit directly and I am not familar with ICG's policy. I have a half I want variety reviewed by NGC and will have to join whatever there thing is, ANA or use a dealer :desk: . I guess I'm not good enough for them to send it in by myself grrrrrrr it makes me mad!!!!!
Well I understand your point, but that is why I qualified my statement. But I must ask you - when you research a coin that you are interested in owning, do you do all of the primary research yourself ? Or do you go by what has been written in books by others and trust that information to be accurate ? When you take medicine prescribed by your doctor - do you trust him to know what he is doing ? When you buy meat at the grocercy - do you just cook and eat it, or do you test it for contamination ? I think you get my point - just like I get yours. But there are those in this world who are deserving of our trust - just like there those who are not. And I'm pretty particular about who I trust.
