Hoo boy. I wish I hadn't given away my Magic 8 Ball. If anyone has strong feelings about submitting rare world coins to PCGS vs NGC, I'd appreciate hearing your views. The argument for spreading submissions around probably doesn't apply in this case, and I keep going back and forth. PCGS seems to handle more world coins & is in my state, but has a 10-day turnaround. I also can't get one hair-raising story about them (hi, GD!) out of my mind. NGC is across the country, but has a 48-hour turnaround and, it sounds like, better holders. I'm mostly concerned with authenticating these coins and getting them into good holders. They aren't being sold, and if it weren't for the additional protection I wouldn't have them slabbed at all.
To be quite honest the majority of the marketplace uses NGC for world coinage. Turn around time undoubtably has some bearing, but in my opinion the people NGC uses are just better at it.
NGC is at the top for world coinage. I see a LOT of high dollar stuff in their slabs, much more so than PCGS.
A quick search on ebay will provide a good example Marianne. Just bring up the main Coins:World page on ebay. Type NGC into the search box and see how many hits you get - then do the same with PCGS. Typically NGC will outnumber PCGS anywhere from 3 to 1 to 6 to 1. The same is true with most of the auction houses.
I can't believe I didn't try that already, GD. My brain is taking a sabbatical. Thanks, Charlie, GD, & Burks, for setting me straight. Once I get these coins back, I'll be able to lead a semi-normal relaxed life again.
