I am considering having my mint state coins slabbed. But I have a question, the answer to which will determine if I do so. My major collecting focus is on mintmark varieties, (RPM's, inverted mintmarks and the various mintmark styles). For example, I have six different 1941S mercury dimes (the standard small "S", 3 different small "S" RPM's, and two with the Trumpet tail "S" representing the two dies on which that mintmark punch was used. My question is, can I get that information on the slabs (I understand there may an extra charge)? I prefer having all of my coins in the same format and identified by type, so I will either do all of them or none.
I can't say what PCGS might do, but if NGC is one of the firms you're considering, you would probably be able to get an answer from them on their forum, "Ask NGC". Chris
You can check here to see if NGC will grade these. http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/ Traditionally, if the varieties are not in the Cherrypickers Guide then NGC or PCGS will not slab them with the variety label. The only one that does so is ANACS.
I believe that there is a $15 variety plus fee per coin in additional to the regular tier grading fee at NGC. >> http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.aspx
Often the TPG think less highly of 'slightly' different variations than specialists who collect them. So where you see 6 different , they may only see 2 different varieties. Sooner or later , you will find some group they will not subdivide as specifically as you. My suggestion is to get nice hard plastic holders and label them for your own pleasure.
