First of all thanks for all the info on this sight. I often lurk but don't have much to say so I stay "quiet".

I came across a 1952D Franklin half in a PCGS holder and picked it up just to look and immediately noticed the coin is a 1952S. It is only an MS 64 in the older style PCGS slab. It was priced decently so I went ahead and bought it. What does the "Error" label do to the value of this coin if anything. I didn't overpay at the 52D price and am just glad to have the somewhat tougher 52S, but was just wondering if the error label might be collectible as well.

    Thanks for any insight,
    Keith

P.S. sorry if the error label thread should go elsewhere, but this seemed to be the best match for the subject.

    Keith,

It doesn't add anything to the value. Data entry errors are relatively common, and when they are caught, the grading service will simply correct it.

I remember once at a FUN Show, I was looking at a dealer's specimens of 1878 8TF Morgans in PCGS slabs. I turned one over to look at the reverse and discovered that it was a 7TF with an incorrect label. When I pointed it out to the dealer who handled nothing but PCGS slabs, he immediately grabbed it out of my hand. I guess he didn't want to make PCGS look foolish.

Thanks Chris. I guess it makes sense that it wouldn't actually add value to the coin, because the coin is what it is! I was really trying to articulate the question of whether or not the error would make it a more collectible "niche". Thanks for giving me some insight. Have a great day.

What chris said, i have a copper plated planchet, it says 3.5 grams when really it is 2.5 grams by NGC. They offered to correct it and reslab it for free including return shipping.

    Hello Keith C,

    Welcome to the forum.

Several people collect slabs that include label errors. [They pay for the slabs in their collections]. I cannot comment on the premium that you might get for the slab. IMO you should not have it re-slabbed without first getting more information. A slab collector like Conder101 might be able to give you more information.
