Skipping of varieties on Canadian Dollars?

Having gotten interested in Canadian halves of the 1937-68 period, I've also decided to (eventually) collect dollars, but just wonder if it's considered acceptable to pass on the dizzying array of varieties.

I expected to see several for 1947, given the issue with India's independence, and for 1953 because of the Elizabeth II Shoulder Fold/No Shoulder Fold issue, so I planned to try and find as many as I could afford.

But the water-line and other varieties for 1950, '51, 52, '54, '55, '65, and '68 -- wow. Do Canadian collectors generally try to find all of these? Is a collection of dollars considered inadequate without all of them?

It'd be great to have them all, I suppose, but just wonder how affordable it would be, and therefore how practical.

You have to decide whats right for you because there are so many varities that collecting them all would be almost impossible. You are right 1947 has 12 Varities that are popular enough to be recognized by charlton and new varities are still being found.

Glad to hear your up for the dollar challenge as well. I hate to say, but IMO a dollar set wouldn't be complete without the water line varietys, and at least the main 47 varietys. But it really comes down to opinion. Why not just do a year set, then after you're done, think about whether or not you want to go deeper into it. I have a feeling you will after you have one from every year.

I think this is a sensible approach. I just like the main design so much, and it'll be cool to have the commemoratives in the series. So I'll start with year sets. And from the Charlton, it looks like the water-line varieties of the '50s and after are quite affordable in mint states, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Meanwhile, I decided to start with the George V halves, so my 1911 and '12 pieces should be arriving from Colonial Acres any day now. :smile
