Hi everyone. Hope you don't mind would like to ask question regarding silver coins. First I am 60 years old. Just started buying silver coins few years ago. I have been purchasing 1oz American eagles coins from Apmex. Is this a good investment at my age? Does anyone believe that silver will increase in value anytime soon? Should I keep purchasing the silver coins and bars? Appreciate any comments. Thank you
Welcome.... Whole lot to respond to here. I am your age. I'll say the same to you that I say to everyone that asks about coins/bullion as an investment vehicle... Don't do it for that reason. Coins/bullion are a wonderful place to store wealth. They are a terrible place to create wealth. Having said that, I have LOTS of silver bullion/coins in my safe. I have two reasons. I like the stuff. And secondly because it is earmarked for my kids/grandkids to have once I leave this party. Now, silver is currently trading as cheap as I have seen it trade in many years. Will it go up soon? Heck, if we knew that we would all be wealthy. It is an attractive time to buy. And I been saying that since silver was at $18.00 an ounce! So you can see my forecasting isn't very reliable!!
I am a collector of Silver coins. I don't collect for investment, I collect for enjoyment. I don't "stack" Silver. My collection is very diverse and includes a large variety of World "bullion" coins. Having said that, I have been able to watch several selected coins appreciate in value over the years. That is due to collector value, not Silver value. If you are looking at investment only, it's going to be a long while before you see any gains. I would suggest looking at other coins to add to your collection. Libertads, Mapleleafs, Britannias, and many others. You will still be collecting Silver bullion, but you will also enjoy your collection more.
I collect coins and stack some silver. I am 57 years old. To me my silver stack is just a storage of wealth to be sold in an emergency. I had sold 3/4's my stack recently (last week) to help pay for a large medical bill. I was glad to have that silver stack to sell. I will start stacking again for the future.
Collect for fun, invest - elsewhere. But, currently, not in the stock market-- from what I have been reading.
you can get ASEs cheaper at ProvidentMetals.com and I'll reiterate .. "wealth storage" don't expect it to increase any time soon. Since 2011 it's been trending down. I have a small stack of silver. But I also have a small stack of cash for emergencies. I don't expect to sell my bullion in my lifetime. Just something neat to leave the kids (hopefully). But none of them have shown an interest in coins. So at some point I may just sell everything and convert it to cash except for maybe a small collection.
↑ Collect for fun, invest - elsewhere. But, currently, not in the stock market-- from what I have been reading. There is trouble brewing there according to Alan Greenspan. When Stocks go down, Metals go up.
It's NOMB but out of curiosity, how did you make out, previous cost versus value received. Lose, gain, or break even? No details needed, just an idea of success or failure in the value department. I buy silver also, to store value for my heirs, but I buy actual coins mostly, not bars or rounds, though I do have some. I buy coins, rather than bullion, in the hopes that the coins, even though they are not "collector quality", will have some numismatic value above the silver melt.
No, initially they move TOGETHER, and then the inflation phobics arrive and all bejabbers breaks loose.
Look back at 2010-2011. Stocks crashed, silver and gold went sky high. In a minor event, maybe together, but in a major event, like the recession, they move in opposite directions. In a stock scare, people take their money out of stocks and put it in precious metals. Stocks are paper value. Metals are "hold in your hand" real. When people are scared, they want to hold it in their hands.
No, YOU GO LOOK. They initially BOTH crashed during the 2008-09 crisis. Then the inflation phobics moved in. I know it’s counter to the narrative usually spewed, but that narrative is bull.
Kurt, I know you're more experienced and intelligent than I am, butttt, did metals hit all time highs in 2011 or not.
There's a bullion investing section here that people are specifically discussing this every day. Look down the forum list a few spots. You'll find plenty of reading material.
hmmm .. stock market I don't quite see the "crash" in 2010-2011. Although one could argue it I guess any time there's any type of correction = crash. But one has to look at the fundamentals of corrections versus crashes such as a few years earlier. at least read wikipedia on "silver as an investment" about 2010-2011, also the short seller section. When Bitcoin was bouncing up I was short spread trading it ... kinda like a lot of the speculative silver traders during that timeframe too.
Here is one example. I paid $25 for this coin in 2008. Example of current pricing: https://www.apmex.com/product/18519/2007-great-britain-1-oz-silver-britannia-bu Current melt is about $14.49 I have several others that have gained over the years.
Although that is APMEX selling it. You get a much lower price, selling to APMEX. One did recently sell on eBay for around $60, half the APMEX price. That's the problem with bullion based coinage. You'll find out how much it's worth once you try to sell it. Then it depends how quickly you want to cash out. The faster cash-out, normally the less you'll garner for it. The longer you wait trying to find that buyer that will spend a higher amount, the longer it takes.
What you say is true. Just trying to make a point that one can be selective in what they purchase at "bullion" pricing and see more appreciation in collector value vs. melt value.
