I'm trying to beat Anchor111's record for number of threads started in a single day. I love these little guys and wonder how it was possible to carry them around without losing a few because of the tiny size. I only have two and this is the better of the pair...anyone else have pics of theirs? I've included a size comparison shot for newbies that might not have seen this coin. Also, what grade would you give mine?
Just think if you had to carry aroung 30 cents in large cents back then. I always have change fall out of my pocket when I sit down in the car or on the couch. Just think about riding on a horse or carrage with the bumpy rides.
I like the 3 cent silver but have only picked up 1 so far....they just are a little high for such a small coin! Speedy
I have one as well. Very neat. Only thing smaller is the $1 Gold (which I picked up recently). One thing having 3c fall out of your pocket, but another thing to have a day's wages (1850's wages that is) fall out and be lost. No wonder the $1 was so unpopular.
No pic but a story. My bro was at an auction (not an internet one) and bought a raw 3CS> It was a very poor strike but had no break in luster. It sold for xf price but PCGS gave it a 61. The poor strike made it look xf.
I need one for my type set too but so far I haven't found anything that attracted me, most I've come across have black marks on them.
All very nice coins guys. I think part of what makes these attractive is the same thing that makes something like a 20 cent piece attractive...we no longer have these denominations around. Oh, and they just look cool!
Heh, yeah they are unique (at least as far as I know) with that big star on one side, large C on the other (a plus). Plus they are tiny (a double plus), and an obsolete denomination (triple plus)... you can't go wrong. Tiny buggers (in good condition) aren't cheap though (the only minus).
The holes found in some coins is from being strung on a loop of wire, to keep them from getting lost.
Here's a fourth neat fact, they are one of only four US coin designs that doesn't contain the word Liberty.
Hey Mikjo0, here those rascals are. An 1852 and a 1853 in pretty rough shape, but they,re 3 cent Silvers. The 1852 us in pretty good shape after looking at her closely. Bone
