Hey everyone, My brother got some new coins that I want to share. They aren't in the best condition, but they're pretty neat. Thanks to those who have inspired him to get a Roman Republic. 1. Ionia, Miletos AR Diobol. Circa 5th Century BC. Obverse: Head of a lion roaring left. Reverse: Stellate pattern within incuse square. References: SNG Kayhan 479. Size: 10mm, 1.14g. 2. Kings of Lydia, Kroisos (c. 564/53-550/39 BC). AR 1/24 Stater (5mm, 0.41g). Sardes. Confronted foreparts of lion and bull. R/ Two incuse squares. SNG Kayhan 1022; Klein 562. 3. L. Roscius Fabatus AR denarius serratus, Rome, 64 BC. Head of Juno Sospita r.; behind, control symbol; below, L ROSCI, Rv. Girl and snake facing each other; on l., control symbol; in ex. FABATI. Crawford 412/1, (s. 34); Sydenham 915; Roscia 3; Catalli 588. 3,81 gm., 17 mm Funny enough, I have a fouree of the last coin on the way and I had no idea he had purchased the real deal. Great minds think alike, I guess. Feel free to show your awesome coinage. Thanks for looking! Erin
Nice group. Very early coins and an early coin. I like the location of the bankers marks on Juno Sospita's nose and chin. I think bankers marks tell some of the story about how coins were viewed and yet is off the features of this coin. That could be in deference to the deity, but I am guessing not. RR coins often have marks on the features. On the other hand I have seen more Athenian Owls with the chop mark on the owl than on Athena.
I had heard this fact before. I have 4 Athena Owls...3 of them have bankers marks on Athena's face... Someone must had been ticked off at her!
neat indeed...nice silver strike you hit there, a cool mix. i have a little miletos lion.... this coin is currently in a public coin display i have, i've had a couple of people remark they were surprised by how small the coin is. i wish i had a little coin like your brothers 5 mm piece to put in with it just to show how little these things get.
Thanks everyone! My brother doesn't really have a focus for his collection. He likes to have a wide variety of coins and artifacts. It makes it really exciting because I never know what coming in the mail for him. Something new and fun every time. I like your lion, chrsmat. He's a cute little guy! I could try and ask my bro if he'd lend it out if you'd like. It'd be cool to have a coin on display like that. Erin
that's very nice of you to offer, but it's going to be over in another couple weeks anyway. plus...i'd feel horrible if i lost it! if i dropped i may never find it again!
I have a couple of these, and I am fascinated by this simple, but busy design on such a SMALL surface!
Fantastic coin, Doug. Thanks for sharing. I remember there was one posted not too long ago with what looked like an ankylosaur on it. That was pretty neat. No worries, chrsmat. I dropped the coin a few times while trying to take a picture of it and my brother was getting annoyed, lol. But, I'm pretty sure my rother would be cool to loan out any of his coins for a display like that. I would be too, but most of my coins are pretty rough compared to his because of different budgets. It never ceases to amaze me how much detail they were able to fit on the small coins. Thanks again! Erin
Wonderful group of silver!! the 'mystery' of what might show up must be super cool---like finding treasure in the mail. Congrats to you and your BRO @Johndakerftw !!!
