    Hello All,

Any ideas about what happened to this penny from 1960? Some kind of high-school science experiment, or something else?

    Thanks!

It’s been coated or plated with an unknown substance. Could be mercury, paint or chrome. They did a lot of weird stuff to coins back then, sometimes for jewelry application.

Unfortunately, any numismatic value has been destroyed due to the surfaces being altered.

It’s only worth face value as it was plated after it left the mint.

Rick is probably right. Otherwise, Spark has the alternate theory I considered.
