This is mainly for the Canadian members of the list. Has anyone ever encountered a Silver Maple Leaf in circulation or seen one which as obvious circulation marks on it? The face value is $5.00 and I personally think they're one of the most beautiful bullion pieces available to the international general public. Bone
I myself have never seen any in circulation. I did hear when silver dropped below the face value for a bit many people did try cash them in, but the banks would not accept them. I think it would be kind of hard to find them in circulation as the average person would not know what they are.
I have never seen one in circulation either, I doubt many people would use them to buy anything. I'm not sure why the banks would not take them either as they are legal tender.
We had a discussion about this about a year ago. I don't know how to post links but the thread is titled "redeemability of $5.00 maple leaf". Check it out. Bill
That really wasn't my question, but thanks. The question initally was, has anyone ever encountered a worn example in their collecting endeavors? Bone
I referred to that thread because someone mentioned legal tender. To answer your question - I have never seen a circulated example. Bill
Silver Maple Leaves are a bullion coin like the Krugerrand.Although they are recognised as legal tender, they are not issued for circulation. Aidan.
If I had a stroke and decided to purchase silver bullion coins, what is the best way to do so? The best coins, and the best place to get them?
I have a small collection of Maples along with Brittanias, Pandas Australian Chinese Zodiac and Kukoburus (They Look Nice) and for the most part buy from Ebay as I can normaly get them for a good price A very good sorce for Bullion in the UK is 'Chard' I have never seen any of the above in circulation though. I bet you anything that i'll NEVER see a silver bullion in circulation in my life time. The bullion is much heavier and larger than regular circulation coins. I'll never be lucky enough to receive one before anyone is stupid enough to pass it along. Its hard enough to encounter 50c pieces in circulation already. At the RCM website. www.mint.ca. I believe Canada Post also has some amount of numismatic silver coins for sale online and at the postal counter near you. www.canadapost.ca Dealers may sometimes have the older bullions priced lower than the original issue price just to clear away some of the older stock.
