1958 Guatemala 10 Centavos Looked like silver. Felt like silver. 0.720 Went away with some tokens and copper goodies too Several varieties of this listed but I don’t know which one
Fifty-five years ago, we all laughed at a local guy who went through junk boxes mostly buying anything silver. I saw him at the FUN show three years ago with boxes of large high grade thalers many worth over 1K! Today he is an experienced numismatist with a $$$$$$ collection. I can often be seen pawing through stuff considered to be junk. It's great fun but the chance of finding something really good like Machin's Mills coppers anymore is very, very low.
Years ago I found a very well beaten up Connecticut copper from ca. 1786-7 in a junk bin at a coin dealer in the mid-Atlantic area. When I pulled it out and purchased it he admitted that he had seeded it in the junk box to see if anyone would recognise what it was and purchase it - he said it had been in the bin for over a decade.
Speaking of Connecticut Coppers, here's one that I found in a dealer's foreign coin bin at a show in Northeast Florida a few years back. However, I doubt he knew what he had, as that wasn't even the best find I made from his foreign coin bin that day. 1787 Connecticut Copper (Miller 33.3-W.1, R.4)
Not too long ago I was at a show and bought numerous world silver coins for under spot, some well under spot. Think I paid about $35 for over 2 ozt of silver.
