i was wondering peoples opinions on which date eagles they would reccommend as the best to put away for a rainy day in sealed mint tubes.

dates i have so far are 1998/2000/2004 im thinking of buying a few tubes of each year to break up into 20 sets for year 2006.What do the expierienced dealers /collectors think the best dates to acumulate are?

Most dealers trade Silver Eagles between each other at a slight premium over melt regardless of the date. The 1986 and 1996 are the only BU dates that trade at higher levels. When selling singles at retail all of the older dates will bring small premiums, again with 86 and 96 bringing the most.

As for getting MS69 and MS-70, you can submit an entire box and not get one out of them. MS-68 is really the norm for Silver Eagles. Anything less is really a poor strike. We have submitted several thousand over the years, and have NEVER gotten one back in MS-70. The difference between MS-68 and MS-70 is so small that I can guarantee that 99% of the people out there couldn't tell. If you are looking to put some rolls away, buy the 1996 rolls. They currently have a greysheet ask of $31, the highest value of any BU Silver Eagle.

    thx nd :)

that still baffles me why perfectly sealed tubes could not make ms70 at least some of them make that.

perhaps the graders only give ms70 to there own coins i know there are things in place to prevent this happening but whats to stop a grader bringing a few in his pocket slabbing then going home with them?.do they to walk through metal detectors ? in and out at work?

In the coin world MS70 is perfect. Now how often do you see perfection in anything ? I will admit - you'll find in coins more often than you will in other things. But even with coins - it is the rare exception.

I could write a post here that explains the grading practices of all the major grading companies that would fill several pages. But it is easier to say - trust me, what you are proposing doesn't happen with them.
