Does Toning decrease the value of a coin. I have a 2001 Buffalo NGC PF-69 that is starting to tone around the rim? Does this affect the 69 certification?
In your case probably not because it sounds that's it's not extreme toning or otherwise ugly but if it was yes it would because it's considered environmental damage.
Depends!! If it turns into a RAINBOW EFFECT, then it might increase the value. It will take a while before you'll know if this is happening. As for a PROOF coin, I'm not sure if toning is a helpful as an UNC coin!! It's all a matter of prefenence, personally I like a toned coin, especially on older Morgan's and Walker's! I guess NGC holders aren't all that air tight, I'm surprised it has toned this fast. I have 20 Buffalo's and not one has lost it's mint luster as yet!!

None of the TPG slabs are. But NGC does have a newer slab they say is airtight. salty - My guess is the toning is due to improper storage. If you change your storage method and contorl the humidity the toning will likely stop. But the other posters are correct - with toning value can go either way as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But unless the toning actually turns to corrosion it will not alter the grade.
As a matter of fact I spent almost 2 hours at the eye doctor today - finally found the chart with that big backward "3" at the top.
