I've always had a fascination of pirates and when I first saw these coins they pretty much screamed "ARRRG". I really don't know much about silver cob coins but I am interested. I think they are Spanish and are 1, 2, 4, and 8 Reales. That's about all I got. How would one go about collecting these coins? Thanks!

As I see it there is a lot of difference according to what is present and what is missing. A coin can have very little detail but happen to include date, assayer, mint and be preferable to one with twice the detail but none of those items. Add to that a preference shown to some special shapes and I decided I was not ready to enter that market.
I hope someone has a good answer to this one.

I'm also interested in these coins, but don't know anything about them. I've bid on a few low end coins that I could make out the date on.

Yeah I like the ones that show the date. I just don't want to buy any until I got a little more info.

The Daniel sedwick website would be a good start. Also, you can find his catalogs on ebay.

There isn't really much info on his site though. Just a bunch of auctions to places to buy them.

The site www.sedwickcoins.com is the better site. He sells coins, and books there.

There are many, many, web sites. And by all means use them. But all of them combined won't teach you what that single book will.

I meant that sedwickcoins was better than Sedgwick auctions for the information asked about. Not better than your link. I am with you about books, much better than anything online.

Go to the Summer Seminar. Take the class on colonial coins. Congratulations, you are now an expert.
