My parents use to get me silver casino coins when they went to Atlantic City so I have about a dozen of them, but I'm confused as to how much silver they contain. I'm reading that only the center contains silver and the outer rim is just gold brass, I was under the impression that it was all silver and the gold part was just plated or painted because how can the coin be labeled .999 fine silver when it's not 100% silver? Does only a portion of a coin have to contain the .999 silver to have that label?

Here's a ebay ad of the type of coin I'm talking about. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Trump-Plaza...ultDomain_0&hash=item5ae6ac4f15#ht_627wt_1163

Usually they run .625 silver. Depends on the maker of the coin though. They are bi-metal so just the center is silver and it is refined to .999 purity.

If I assume correctly, what you have are silver strikes. The most common denomination is $10. The outer ring is brass, and only the center is .999 silver. You will note that .999 is on the silver portion, not the brass. Prior to 2005, the silver weighed six-tenths of an ounce, but from 2006 on, it weighs one-half of an ounce.

    Here are a few examples........
