    Here's a section for those who are interested in the English silver 1d.'s of
    King Edward I.Yes,I do know that these are the most common hammered coins from the British Isles.I have got the following ones;

    Canterbury - CIVITAS CANTOR.

    Durham - CIVITAS DURELME (King's Receiver).

    London - CIVITAS LONDON.

    & Newcastle-on-Tyne - NOVA CASTRIUM.

    How does one go about trying to identify which Classes these pieces belong in?

    Ah now there's a question.

    I used to know the answer to part of that question off of the top of my head.

    Firstly you need to know what mint it is, which you do.

    Secondly you need to know if it's a trifoliate or a bifoliate crown. (three or two prongs at either end).

    Then you need to make a not of the n's on the obverse and reverse, to see if they are lombardics (n) or Roman (N), also note any reversed S's or reversed bars on the N's.

    The legend also helps greatly;

    EDWARD R, EDWAR R, EDWA R, EDW R.

    I know the first trwo legends are certainly present on Edward I coins, i can't remember which one of the latter two is the correct one.

    If memory serves correct EDW/A is the earlier legend and EDWAR/D is the later.

    Although i'm not sure on that, i may have got that the wrong way around. That bit is all i can remember without looking at a book.

    You also have to study the portraits too.

    I actually find Edward III coins far more problematic, or coins of the Henries... e.g here's an Henry Groat... what is it?

    Arrgghhh!
