i have no idea if im on the right site or not... just got given a 1946 silver sixpence coin with king george VI on it and its australian and thought it might b worth somethin. Never seen one before I am from australia... is this a site for any coins around the world?
Hi, nic0le, you are surely on the right site. As to the coin you ask about, the 1946 australian sixpence, it is not a very valuable coin in general. It weights 2.82g and is amde of 50% silver, so the metal value is minimal (~30 cents). There was about 10 milion such coins made in 1946, so it is not very rare either. In uncirculated condition (looks like it came straight from mint) is worth about 17 US dollars. If it is worn, the value drops to a buck or two. If it is a proof coin (very shiny, really well made - post a picture if you want, we will see) it is worth considerably more (~$900), but chances of that are really small. N.
hi, the coin is shiny in the centers of the back and front but around th edges are tarnished. I go though heaps of weird fazes and i was wondering, how did u first start coin collecting? I have some regrets about coins i chucked out years and years ago which would be worth quite a bit now. Well they were mainly tokens but i have come across a few strange looking coins which i took no notice of!
Well, I guess for everyone it's something different. I was collecting coins as far as I remember, first, I put in a little box whatever I got from relatives and friends, and it slowly developed into a hobby... If you want, ask in the main forum, I am sure many people will share their stories. And I do remember giving away coins just because someone wanted them. Now I got rather possesive: try and take my coins grrrrrrrr...
The only King George VI Aussie 6d. that would be worth something is the 1942 & 1943 ones WITHOUT a mintmark. These are the Aussie ones struck at Melbourne. The ones with 'D' & 'S' mintmarks were struck in America at Denver & San Francisco. The American struck silver coins are relatively common,& have a much clearer appearance to them, whereas, the Melbourne mint ones have a markedly fuzzy appearance to them.
