That is cheap for a nice 17-. Looks like a nice strike, but it is so hard to tell with the graininess. That is my favorite date. They have so much more detail than the rest of the dates.

I really like that wood grain finish.

DJ drag your mind out of the gutter dude.

I like "woodys" Jack. My number 1 two cent set has an 1869 PCGS (cracked out) woody in it. The MS63RB remains in the slab.

Jack, I don't think that was a silly price! I think you did pretty darn good. :thumb: That 17 that RLM posted, wow! Man, I'm a sucker for red wheats. :D Congrats on the latest addition man! :thumb:

    Phoenix

That 17- did not meet the reserve. It was bid to $10,200. Just guessing that the reserve was up around $14,000 - maybe more.

Jack - Are you planning to send that to ANACS so they can tell you it is XF?

Okay, here's a silly question... what actually makes a cent a "woody"?

The alloy was not properly mixed. It is not uncommon for Lincolns through at least the mid 20's.

Not to stray too far off topic here, but I have a roll of 63Ds that are all bright, bright red, except that some of them look like they have been "splattered" with brown paint... teeny tiny splatters that look kind of like scratches until you magnify. Not very attractive really. Could this be a bad alloy mix or something else?

I'll see if I can take some pics...

On the modern coins, aside from the fact that they now know how to mix alloys, they are coated with pure copper. It is not an alloy. It sounds like just carbon spots.
