Here's why we check our pocket change. Today at work a gentlemen came into my office asking if I knew about coins, heard it through the grapevine I guess. He was curious about the Wisconsin "mistake" quarters, as he put it. I immediately pulled out my CoinWorld and showed him the photos depicting the two variations. "Yep, that's it", he said, "my kid's got 2 of 'em". After I picked myself up off the floor I asked to see them. He said they were with his 13 year old son at school. Again, after I picked myself up off the floor, I told him to get them from him, right away, before they go into the pop machine. Turns out the boy needed change for a $1 for a pop and the teacher gave him 4 quarters, 2 went into the machine and the remaining 2 were the Wisconsin's. I hope the pop vendor checks his change, the other 2 might have been also since all 4 were state quarters. I told him I would have to see the coins to verify if they were the variations and he is going to bring them to me at 3:00 to inspect. I can't wait, I hope they are the real McCoy. What a treat that would be for that youngster. I'll get back later to tell you what I found out.
Wow! That is exciting. Yeah, let us know what you find and post pictures if you can. BTW, I found a 2005 Bison Nickel with the pupil missing from Jefferson's right eye. ehehe
Very COOL Steve, That is the first I've heard of the Wis. variation being found that far north. I was under the impression they had only been found in AZ. & TX. Was I WRONG AGAIN ?? Dave
You have to remember, in the amount of time that has now passed since the coins were issued there has been plenty of time for them to move about the country via normal circulation.
We met at 3:30. I almost hit that darn floor again when he handed me the coins. They had them LAMINATED!! As it turns out it was just not to be this time around. Someone had gouged the leaf on with a sharp object. I felt so bad for the boy. To see his face turn from absolute joy to utter dissapointment was horrible. We did have a long very good conversation though. I showed him how to tell his was a fake and how the true variation would look, how it was made, etc.. We talked coins and he did seem very interested. Before long he had my loupe and was checking all his pocket change, he kept saying "cool". I gave him all of my old issues of Coin World, the monthly price guide and an extra copy of Photograde and you would have thought he DID find the real quarter by the look on his face. I know what he'll be doing tonight. I think I will ask if they want to go to the next coin show with me and meet some great dealers/friends, I think he would like that.
Aw, thats so nice of you! I wish I could find a mistake quarter to take to you so I could get some stuff haha, j/k, but all jokes aside good job!
