It is a solvent of organic compounds that will not affect your coin. You can get it at a hardware store. Use it in a well ventilated area as it is fast evaporating and very flammable. It is not harmful to touch and for the most part, not too bad to inhale though I don't recommend it.

...and when your relatives say "hey, where is that coin I bought you, I want to see it, so I can buy one for myself".

    Not always..... http://www.cointalk.com/forum/t51293/

Good luck. Thats all part of becoming a collector. My family doesn't ever get me anything because I have told them not to. Either give me money to buy what I want or get me something else. Several years ago for my birthday some friends of mine went out and bought me a couple older mint sets. Fortunately, I needed them and they were in an acceptable condition. But that was the last time any of my friends ever got me anything to do with coin collecting. Just make it a rule with family and friends...... no coins for gifts and you will never be disappointed. :hammer::)

I'm afraid I completely agree with that. Keep those coins as is. A few odd ball, wierd coins in your collection is much, much better than nasty comments, whispering behind your back, snide remarks and all for just a little funny coinage. Only coin collectors hate those things. Many, many people are buying them every day. A bunch of irritated relatives is just not worth some funny looking coins.
You can always find or buy coins, acquire friends at almost any bar, have a drink with neighbors but you'll find out when you get old a happy relative is a nice thing.
Now here is a thought. A long time ago a coin that was all blurry was usually dumped back into changes as a yuk thing. Today such coins are collector items. So too may all those painted coins.
