This just arrived today. It cost more than most of the coins I buy but it checks several boxes of things that interest me: colonial Africa, animal motif, large copper coin. 1791 Sierra Leone 1 penny.
Here's a fun fact relating to these pennies. I don't have exact statistics and facts down, but once I find them I'll be sure to post them in this forum page. A bunch of these pennies, something like 30,000+, brand new and freshly minted were heading towards the colony on a ship when the ship sank off the shores of Africa. That ship is yet to be recovered, and without a doubt those pennies are still lying on the ocean floor to this day. It would be super cool for someone to someday salvage this treasure and bring those coins back to the surface.
