This guy just arrived today and I love it. wondering what the best route to clean something like this would be?
I would leave it as is. Could be this one: Syracuse, Sicily ca. 317 – 305 BC, struck under Agathokles http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/sicily/syracuse/timoleon/Mionnet_624.jpg
I don't think I would try cleaning that coin. If that red stuff is part of the patina then removing it could severely damage the coin's details. But I could be wrong. On my version they're facing the other way. SICILY, SYRACUSE Time of Timoleon and the Third Democracy, 337-317 BC AE (15.09mm, 3.00g, 8h) Struck 336-317 BC Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right Reverse: ΣΥΡΑ, Pegasus flying right SNG Munich 1185
That's a beautiful piece. I'm curious how do you photograph your coins? and I cant tell if the red stuff is clay or bronze dieses perhaps?
The red deposits are part of the coins patina and will not come off easily. Trying to remove it will only damage the coin. I have several coins with similar deposits but I just left them alone.
Thanks! I use a tripod-mounted Nikon D3200, standard lens with extension tubes, and a couple desk lamps with daylight-spectrum bulbs. The background and shadows are done using GIMP.
