That is one nice beauty. I love the attention Sicilian coinage is getting lately...though I may come to regret it when others swoop in and beat me at auction or to purchasing these coins from dealers.

Excellent coin! These coins are hard to grade. I consider wear much less important than centering, die deterioration and surfaces. Yours is excellent in so many ways. I am surprised we have not had more of this huge series compared to the hundreds of owls and Alexanders that seem now to be so popular. Mine is lesser but has been with me for many years. I note yours has the legend retrograde and base out. Interesting.

    Thanks :)
The reference is Boehringer 345. Very hard to find. Maybe 3 or 4 exemplars sold in 10 years.

Very nice indeed, and lovely toning. Mine is a few years later under Hieron I (478-467), Gelon's brother. It is missing a few heads.

I know I show it every so often but I have one other, later Syracuse tetradrachm Boehringer 703 which used reverse die 481 which had a bad die break and was falling apart. I have seen another of the die which was even further damaged than mine but I have no idea how many survive and how many distinct states there are.

Congrats on the beautiful acquisition, Thierry, and thanks for sharing it!

I have just one of these, but would love to have more, including an earlier one like yours.

    Bienvenue Thierry,
