Hello Everyone! A small guilty pleasure of mine is when people post their fake coins. Some people don't realize they are fake until the knowledgeable people point it out. Others post known fake coins... Both contemporary as well as modern. I love to see the fakes.. I attempt to learn how to spot them so that I don't get taken at the Flea Market, or online. I find it absolutely amazing that someone would spend hours and hours to make a fake dime... Seems like a waste of time, but still fascinating! We've seen the "good" fakes... produced lately in China and alike. I'd love to see your worst of the worst faked coins... The ones that look like they were carved by someone who drank 10 gallons of coffee!
On the surface the three center seems pretty crude - but you know it would have fooled anyone not giving it a close look. It is very definitely cool and I wish it reposed in my collection instead of yours!
A really bad fake in chrome plated lead of a 1950 quarter - made to get simple monetary gain and not to fool collectors.
1823 Contemporary Counterfeit Listed in Davignon 1st Edition Not a rare example, but kinda neat: Click this bar to view the full image. Click this bar to view the full image.
Love them all... Keep them coming. But.. if this were a contest (and it's not), I'd have to say that the 3 center takes the cake so far. I don't think I saw a straight line on the whole thing! That's the best one in my honest opinion.... Though a close second would definitely be the crooked nose busty half!
My dad got these in Batavia (old part of Jakarta) in the 90s when we lived there. Not sure what he paid but I'm sure it wasn't much since he knew they fake when he got them. He gave them to me along with his real coins a while ago.
1865 Washington quarter... Now THAT's one even I could have picked out... That's awesome! Hmm... is it clad?!?! My book says only the 32 to 64 washington's were silver... lol..
This thread makes me think of my younger days in the hobby. I was too stupid to spot a fake and returned several to dealers. Today I understand that several of those are worth more than the real coin. That was a different time. We will not see that with the modern fakes coming from China. Just way too many being made.
