I'm gonna have a few REALLY nice pieces to post here in a very short while, so I figure I'll get the thread all warmed up and ready for them. :hail::hail::hail: Mihi sestertios ostende! (Show me the sestertii!) [And before you ask, "Show me the money" would be "Mihi pecuniam ostende"]
My only one from my favorite Roman emperor Antoninus Pius Sestertius Obverse: Laureate head right ANTONINVS (top) AVG P... Reverse: Legend missing except for one letter "D" or "O" Figure is hard to identify and could be: Concordia, Clementia, Pax Diameter: 32mm Thickness: 4mm
Well, I only have a picture of one of mine, but here it is... Marcus Aurelius RIC 948 Struck 167 AD 32mm 27.52 grams Rev: Victory The reverse isn't very good, but I bought it for the obverse portrait, which I love! Can't wait to see yours Ardatirion!
Here's two of mine (not the two I'm waiting on). 1. Commodus, AE sestertius – 31mm Rome, 181 AD obv legend: M COMMODUS ANTONINUS AVG obv design: laureate bust r. rev legend: LIBERTAS AVG TR P VI IMP IIII COS III PP SC rev design: Libertas standing l. with pileus and scepter ref: RIC 311, C 335 2. Antoninus Pius, AE sestertius – 30mm Rome, 145-161 AD obv design: Head, laureate, r. obv legend: ANTONINVS PIVS PP TR P rev design: Pax standing l., setting fire with torch to heap of arms and holding cornucopiae rev legend: COS IIII, PAX AVG in field, SC in exergue ref: RIC 777
Well, they came! And they look even better in hand. The Claudius just emotes imperial granduer, and the incredibly thick Severus has one of the best portraits of the man I've ever seen: bust seen from behind, a great curly hair-do, and even an evocative look in his eyes. I paid 150 for the pair (about a 200 dollar discout off the ticket price!) 1. Claudius AE sestertius - 35.2mm, 24.9g Rome, 41-42 AD obv legend: TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP obv design: laureate head r. rev legend: EX S C / O B / CIVES / SERVATOS ref: RIC 96, BMC 115, C 39 2. Septimius Severus AE sestertius - 31.4mm, 28.4g Rome, 196 AD obv legend: L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII obv design: laureate, cuirassed bust r., seen from behind rev legend: P M TR P IIII COS II PP SC rev design: Victory advancing r., holding wreath and palm ref: RIC 725, C 420
