As the title states, I want to see the best coin you got for 200.00 or less (not including shipping). Here is mine: Theophilus (AD 829-842), with Constantine and Michael II. AV solidus (20.07 mm, 4.38 gr. Constantinople, Obv: ΘЄOFI-LOS bASILЄ Θ, Rev: MIXAHL S COhSTAhTIN', Sear 1653. Berk 249. DO 3. Ex: Harlen J Berk Purchased November 28, 2016.
WOW, you STOLE that at $200 4.38g gold x spot/g 39.51 x 0.90 (assume 90%? gold purity) = $155.75 USD GOLD value... so you spent $45 ($200 less the $155 gold) for a 1200 year old piece of History! KILLER
As far as well preserved coins go, I got this one for around $90 USD with shipping and auction house fees included. On vcoins, $90 will get you a much rougher one.
t seems a shame no one wants to show coins but JA was right that any gold would seem worth the price. I don't collect gold for exactly that reason. To realize the full value of the coin, you should not have to melt it. I have a couple of Byzantine golds that cost $100 but that was well under melt back then. I can almost play. I do not record prices without shipping, taxes etc. so I do not know exactly how much I paid for this one (not including shipping). It came from Canada so it may be legal even though my recorded price is $210 postpaid. The coin is a Byzantine Anonymous A3 follis worth well under $100 overstruck on a Laetitia as of Gordian III also worth well under $100. I was willing to pay double for what I considered the cool factor of there being an 800 year gap between the two uses. I have several overstruck coins but none hung around for even 80 years (more likely just 8???) between uses so 800 seemed worth a premium.
Nearly all my coins costs less than $200. How to pick just one? But I'll just say this is one I like alot MARCUS ANTONIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley, thyrsos behind prow REVERSE: LEG XXII, eagle between standards Patrae 32-31 BC 3.6g, 20mm RSC 27
Doug, That coin is a very cool artifact. I like it very much. It seems to have multiple stories associated with its multiple strikes.
Curious... Isn't that what the ancients did? Value was placed on the coin's underlying precious metal content and value as a means of transaction value?
Can't say exactly if this is my best but its definitely up there in my favorites that are of <$200. It cost me around $150 and on top of that it is a rare reverse variety, with the city name around the cross instead of it being set up as two lines of text on top of each other in the field. Philip Grierson in Medieval European Coinage V.1 speculates that "[its] most likely explanation is an initial misunderstanding of a mint instruction prescribing the type, perhaps the ambiguity of some phrase like nomen nostrum habeatur in gyro et in medio crux, in altera parte nomen civitatis". Hard to beat that deal, @Orfew! Tough question. Maybe this, for $125. They typically go for a lot more because of the association with Scipio Africanus. Spain, Punic Iberia, c. 237-209 BC. Æ Unit (24mm, 10.3g). Large male head l. R/ Horse standing r.; palm tree in background.
I would say about 95% of my collection is under $200. Can't say its my best, but its my current favorite.
@ValiantKnight Wow, the denier is great. I love that it has the full text. I think you did incredibly well on that coin for 150.00. I have looked at many examples of his coins and any of them in the condition of yours were much more expensive. Great coin!
I have been looking for a coin of Scipio Africanus and yours is a great example for a really nice price.
