I remember that Freedom train. As I recall in 1976, it traveled around the country and the train cars each contained a small museum of American history. I was 15-16 years old when that train visited my town and I remember seeing my first bicentennial coins there. Sure did flame my numismatic fires!

Shrews, you need to come up with a theme that I can participate in! Maybe coins with eagles or dead presidents on them or something... LOL

    Western & Atlantic RR 50c.jpg

Here is a note that the Western & Atlantic Railroad issued during the Civil War. The most famous episode occurred when a group of Union spies, led by James Andrews, hijacked The General a locomotive at a place called Big Shanty and took it northward to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their goal was to do as much damage to the railroad as they could.

A Western & Atlanta conductor, William Fuller, set off after them. He rode on a number of conveyances including a handcar and locomotive called The Texas.

Everything went wrong for the Union spies. It was raining so they couldn’t set the tracks on fire. They didn’t have enough wood to fuel the engine even after the cut up the box cars. The spies were captured and either hanged or imprisoned.

There is a somewhat inaccurate version of the story presented on a Walt Disney movie in the 1950s. I have an article about this that I wrote some years ago that I could hunt up if there is interest.

  13. I don't own any coins with trains but you might like this old South Carolina Railroad Note. I bought it many years ago when my job moved to SC. Hope you enjoy, Steve. 20200423_222943.jpg

I visited the freedom train and have this patch as a souvenir. I picked the medal up just recently. Polish_20200423_213435664.jpg Polish_20200423_213005710.jpg

My next few post are in honor of one of our members that passed several years ago.
His name is Rey. Great guy. These are some of the medals he posted here. I have always wondered what became of his collection.
