I have a moderate coin collection which I need to sell. It is about 10-15 Dansco books (not full). I realize I would make more money selling coins individually, but that is not going to happen given my time frame. Would it be better to sell each Dansco book individually, or to the entire Dansco set as one? (I am thinking eBay.)
You would probably make more money by selling them individually, but I think if you factored in the time it would take to photograph and list every one, you might not do much better than if you sold them as one lot. Also, with raw coins, you have to be very careful how you describe the condition of each coin. One of my pet peeves is when a seller says something like, "In my opinion, this coin is Gem BU, but I'm not a professional grader, so you be the judge." If you're selling an album, you might have a buyer forgive one or two minor discrepancies about condition, but selling them individually, you're liable to get more disagreements about condition which could lead to returns. I believe the more you can break it down, the more upside you will potentially have. A great deal of this reasoning is down to the number of photographs you can take and post. The larger, clearer and brighter (without blowing them out) the photographs you can take of more of the individual items, the better you should do. So trying to get all of the photographs of such a large lot together, you'll have the ability to show less detail. The more you can break it down, the better off you'll be - that's my feeling.
You can list and sell anything you want on ebay, but remember the fees and shipping will eat up around 15% or more. If I were you, I'd start by posting them for sale on here in the "for sale" forum and see what turns up first.
