I just got an offer to buy this 1926-S for $156 including shipping. Opinions please before tomorrow at this time (5:00).
If it's yours to sell, say H no, not at that price. If you can buy it at that price...do it in a minute
Here is what showed up. At the very least, someone has scraped some dirt off of it. Although it does look unc., something just is not right. Any comments? - PLEASE!
I think I would like you to post a better pic of the left side of the obverse...something is running across the grain that you can see and we can't. Still, a very strong coin. Is the luster broken? Your right at "ask" on a really tough coin, so this has to be is it UNC and is it original? If so, it will carry a nice premium over a generic 26-S ask price, if not...it's an overpriced AU. Edit. The more I look at your original pics....and the new ones, the more I'd say I would keep it, but thats me, it is in your hands
That area is the dirt I was talking about. I do not know how it got so much dirt on a coin that looks unc. to me.
optimism clouds the eyes sometimes....what am I missing Doug? Rlm knows his cents, and thinks it UNC, and I see some cloudyness on the right obverse on the original pics, some woodgraininess ( which I like )... but the thing that has me wondering is the cros grain on the obv left I also see some impacted dirt, or dark colors around devises and lettering, but I do not see any harsh cleaning.
Doug's definition of "harsh cleaning" in any noticeable cleaning. Although I see no wear on the coin (unc), I kind of suspect that it has been cleaned and nearly sure that the area around LIBERTY has been picked at (toothpick?) to remove the dirt. How an unc got so much dirt, I do not know. If you look at the lettering (mostly GOD and TRUST), you can see how dark the insides of the letters are. If this coin was not cleaned, those should be the brightest areas on the coin and they are not.
Well not quite rlm, but I will admit that I usually only mention it when I think it was harsh cleaning. But on this coin, I see the same things you guys see. And the only way that happens is by human hand. Yeah you can have wood grain coins, but the grain always goes the same direction thru the whole coin and on this one the streaks definitely change direction. And on the reverse look at how embedded the dirt is on wheat stalk on the left while the one on the right is totally dark. To me that is a sure sign the coin has been harshly cleaned - without even considering the obverse.
