I have this gold 1945 2 peso coin in a necklass that my dad gave to me and I have heard that the thing the holds the coin in can damage it. The face of the coin is alright but I dont know if the rim is. Should I remove my coin if it has damage or should I leave it in? (sorry for bad quallity image)
I would take it to a jeweler to have it removed. If it’s damaged they can just remount it. What’s to loose? It shouldn’t be to expensive and if it’s damaged the mounting can be cleaned and adjusted at that time before remount. It’s a win / semi-win situation. I like my glass half full please! Reed. Oh and welcome to CT.
I would just leave it as is. It can't be damaged anymore than it already would be, and it looks like it is a "cleaned" coin anyways.
If dad gave it to you as a necklace I would wear it as such. That's probably why he didn't take it out. That's the way i would look at it. I'm no coins in jewelry expert but I have had a few coins in bezels that I have worn. All I had to do is accept that the coin has likely been damaged to some degree and will not be worth a great premium to the numismatic community. Sweat and rubbing on garments has likely taken some toll on the coin. But you have to make the call!!
Thanks for the info I will take this into consideration as the rim of the coin is mostly covered so even if it is damaged I can just put it back in its necklass. The damage is not very visible anyway.
If it has been put into jewelry it's probably already damaged. If it has been put into jewelry it's probably been polished. Unless it is an incredibly rare coin, it's only going to be worth the gold value. If the sentimental value is higher than the gold content value, just leave it as it is. If you put another coin in there, then that coin will get damaged.
Leave it as is. If it is damaged, taking it out won't help. And, if it has been worn then the friction will have rubbed the coin as well. It's a jewelry piece, leave it as such.
The 1945 2 Peso was minted as a restrike for a number of years, so your coin is only worth melt, regardless of condition. The value really won't change if it's perfect or has some minor jewelry damage. The decision to remove it or keep it in the bezel is entirely up to you. IMO, I would keep it in the mount as I think it's a nice piece of jewelry
