Ok I have a 04 Silver Proof and Mint Set and also the Silver Proof Quarter set. Since I have 2 siver quarter sets would it be worth having one set graded.
I agree with National Dealer. The modern day mint uncirculated and proof sets, except for mint errors, for the most part have very high quality strikes. It is harder to find consistent quality in the older sets, making the older ones worth grading if you find an exceptionally nice one.
Just curious, GunLocators, where did you get the idea that paying a third party grading company to slab your Mint products, would be to your advantage? I ask as a friend, and as a fellow collector who wishes to learn all he can about the hobby.
Well being NEW to the hobby this seemed a legit question I have read graded coins by like NGC has better resell value. I assume from your post this may not be the case at all. I also figured by the off chance you get a deep cameo high graded coin will this coin have considerable resell value?
On very rare occasions slabbing modern coins do add to the value. Finding the ultra gem coins worth the price of slabbing are very few and far in between. This year, we have bought over a thousand sets and submitted 4 individual coins for certification.
Thanks for replying. I kind of thought you were looking at it from an investment/resale point of view. See, I never buy coins with any thought as to their resale potential, so any input I can get from those that do, only benifits me and increases my awareness as to other aspects of the hobby. Yes, I have a LOT of money tied up in my collection, but it was money that was spent over many years, and I never spent enough at one time to hurt anything. I have a very good idea as to what each piece, as well as the whole collection, is worth. I have to do this for insurance purposes. I do have money invested in things like CD's, GIA's, savings accounts etc., but I would never consider coins as an investment. Just too riskey, and not enough potential. Now, don't get me wrong, there are certain coins that are virtually gauranteed to rise in value, but I can't afford those. Anyway, thanks for the insight, and good luck.
One collection I recently purchased had some Capitol Commem dollars with no boxes and no paperwork...so I submitted them all...about 15 of them. Every single one came back from NGC as pr69 ultra deep cameo...not a one made 70. Oh well. With no boxes they're still better off in a slab, for my purposes. To answer the OPs question...NO. Generally that's not something I'd advise. Nick
