So, I recently found a couple examples of a Jefferson Nickel proof variety (1942 WDDR-003) in unattributed PCGS PR66 holders. I am 100% sure these are WDDR-003 as they contain all the die markers and evidence of the DDR. Here is a raw example (because I know we like pictures!): Die gouge on obverse above Jefferson's collar: Die dot in left curved window (about 2/3 of the way from the bottom) Diagonal die scratch above short right window Doubling on all letters around the rim and FIVE CENTS If I intended to sell them (not now, but maybe later) would it be better to: *Keep them in the original slabs, as is (cost: $0) *Keep them in the original slabs, get them attributed by James Wiles (cost: $6/coin + shipping) *Cross them over to ANACS slabs to get the variety listed on the slab (cost: $~20-25/coin + shipping to, not from - 10 coin $125 special) Seems like there are benefits and drawbacks to each option...just thought I'd get some outside opinions. I'm leaning toward option 3.
Of course, as I look at one of the PR66, it has a bit of verdigris to the right of Monticello - so that might be important information. I might just keep that one in the holder...
Great question! I don't know what I would do if planning on selling them. Would the new fees not outweigh the additional revenue you would be able to collect. I know a lot of people would rather have it on the holder, but you should be able to convince them that it is the DDR considering all the markers are there. I am biased anyway. I love Jeff's and would keep them all to myself. If I knew what it was I wouldn't need it on the slab. Beautiful coin by the way and good luck either way you go.
Don't send it to grade @Anacs Pcgs is were I would have it re graded .but PR 66 is one of the highest this coin may grade.
Angelo, This coin is not the PCGS PR66. This is a raw coin that also has this same die variety. it was only used as an example (since I already had photographs taken, since it's listed on eBay.) Jay, I, too, have a quaint little Jefferson collection, and these are currently part of it (not the raw one, that's being sold to pay for the others.) I'm just trying to look ahead...if I need to sell it in the future, or if my family needs to sell it once I'm gone, will it be easier to sell...and gain the most price. Currently I don't believe NGC attributes this variety. ANACS does not have one listed in their Pop Reports, and I'm not sure if PCGS will attribute this or not. I think the ideal situation would be to have them in PCGS slabs...but I would have to have them submitted for me by the LCS. I should ask Paddy54 - I know he has at least one.
