Should I get these coins graded? present to dad (Morgans, Liberty Nickel, Buffalo)

***Morgans, 1906 Liberty $5 Gold, 2006 American Gold Buffalo***

Ok. There is so much information on the web. I'm confused. Haha.

I'm thinking about getting my dads coins graded for him for christmas. Doesn't seem like a bad idea, eh?

Anyways, he has the following:

Morgan
S-1878,1880,1881
P-1885,1886,1887,1889,1890,1900
O-1883,1902,1904
D-1921
CC-1884

The morgans were a set bought with certificate of authenticity. They say "Brilliant Uncirculated Condition", but I really don't know. I look at them and they seem like they are in pretty dang good condition.

Front and back seems to be in very, very good condition, but what do I know? Seems to have very. very tiny chip on the rim, but other than that, really good. I think it is a 1906-S $5 liberty gold coin because it has an eagle on the back and says Five D. Not sure?

Anyone know if I should get them graded? Which service, will it cost much?

Should I take pictures of them?

Also, the coins are in hard plastic little containers. Will I them at all damage if I take them out to photograph? Do I use gloves? Any clues?

Maybe. Some like 'em slabbed, others do not.
PCGS is the most respected. ANACS and NGC are next. Any of these would be fine.
But if I was your Dad, I would like another coin!!! Ya got a couple of months, check around, go to some shops, take pictures.
I'm sure there are a few members that would assist you in your search.

I agree. Grading is one of those things that some people really like and others really hate...but what all coin collector's love is more coins. So, I would go this route instead.

 

Yea good idea. Maybe I'll get him another coin instead. Although, the thing is, he likes buying coins like once every 7 years, but if it would warrant enough of a profit for him, I think he'd sell them. He paid like $150 for the $5 liberty years ago and $750 for the set of Morgans like 10-15 years ago. If they weren't worth enough to get graded then I doubt me or him would waste the time or money to do so. If it's too expensive for me to pay for the grading, I think he might do it. I've talked to him about it, and he is interested, but he's like me. Will it be worth it or not.

Also, no flash? Do I just put it on the counter and take the picture? Any advice?

I agree with Doug and I think he gave the best advice. Plus, pictures would help determine if they are really worth grading. If nothing else I like seeing pictures of coins.

I sure wouldn't want someone else to send my coins off for grading if I didn't expressly state that I wanted this done. Also, the others are right about the turn around time and expense and while the coins are out, won't your father notice them missing? and inquire? then you'll have to tell him in advance and there won't be a holiday surprize in your gift. I also agree with the others to try to get him a new coin. Also if he's not a member to any of the grading companies you could buy him a membership. NGC and PCGS come with basic levels memberships that include free grading coupons which your father could decide to use for himself if and when he's ready to have any coins graded. Can't wait to see your photos. Take a look around and watch how other members frame their shots. Also there's a search feature in the toolbar above, do a search for threads that discuss coin photo tips here on CT, there are many. :thumb:

 

No no no. I've talked about this with him. He isn't a collector so a membership would be pointless. And he's interested in the worth of the coins. He himself might grade them if it's worth it. I just didn't take his coins without asking.

True, but you can edit them for up to 24 hours. At least that is how long. So typo's and such can be fixed.

 

Well. The coolpix camera we have sucks so my sister is bringing her camera in a week. Hers is like $3,000, so I'll have some good quality pictures.

well let me help u understand this better u know how there are dates on pennies, well i have a 1969 penny and the 6 sets up higher than the other numbers. this is quite noticable and i'm wondering if this means anything. i hope i've been much clearer this time for u..... lorie
