Should I dip this coin in ezest for about 5 seconds? It has a not so attractive broken up haze on it but the coin is in pretty nice condition exept for a small knick on the kneck. What do you think?

    Noooo

You didn't learn yer lesson yet huh? Cleaning coins is not a good thing, generally makes the problem worse, like you saw on your Coulmbus half. Consider it a rule and experiment on cheapos if you want, but that there nickel is too nice a coin to mess up dipping.

The nickel guys might tell you it already has been cleaned

absolutely not. almost every time, when coins are dipped, the value of them will go down.

Well with my Columbus I actually rubbed it with amonia and qtips. Then I dipped it in ezest which made it look much better and made the previous mistake less noticable.

But regardless it sounds like a resounding no on this one.

I can look pretty rough in the mornings but don't dip my face in Ezest.

The coin looks fine - leave it alone!

Don't ever dip a coin that isn't uncirculated. And unless you know what your doing, don't dip uncirculated coins either. ;)

One word: No. That coin is actually not that bad looking, nothing that should warrant it getting dipped. Only dip or clean coins if it is neccesary, like if a coin has PVC damage, corrosion, etc. Things that will damage the coin along the road. Can do a search on cleaning, and you'll get a bunch of threads and posts about it man. Happy collecting!

No No No.....leave it as is. Alot of people believe that cleaning a coin makes it a better coin, which is never true. Not only does cleaning a coin take away its numismatic value but also all of the history its gathered in its life, if you know what I mean.

Pretty sure this has not been cleaned. I didnt clean it and its been sitting up in the attic for about 25 years.

Raisetowin, please do not take me as offensive or rude in any case, but I am just trying to help. Do not intend to come across at all like that.

Just because it was sitting in your attic for about 25 years, and that you didn't clean it, doesn't neccasarily mean it is not cleaned. There is a bunch of time between that that it could have been cleaned, and since retoned a bit. A former owner of it might have thought it looked ugly like you did, and cleaned it. There is about a 72 year span it sounds like, inbetween sometime in there, being cleaned. Makes no difference how long you had it really, unless you got it straight from a mint roll, which most of the time is highly unlikely. :D I hope this helps a tad, and like I said in my disclaimer (lol), mean no offense or rudeness. Enjoy the hobby my friend! :thumb:

This may be obvious but an attic is not the ideal place to store your coins.

People have been cleaning coins as long as they have been collecting them, and probably even before.

After looking at this coin and the two other coins you posted, I think it is likely that this coin was cleaned, and has since started corroding. The buffalo and the dime both look to be corroded also (some people might call it dark or black or even the now-hip term "Circ Cam" toning, but to me it is corrosion because it has eaten into the surface of the coin). Please understand I don't say this to be mean, but it is my honest opinion.

FWIW, coins stored in areas that have large temperature and humidity swings (like an attic or a garage) often have this happen.

    Respectfully and regretfully yours...Mike

Your probably right. But I still think the buffalo is cool as hell. LOL. Just appealing to my eye I guess.

Why would you think of dipping a nice looking coin in a cleaner?

    NO.
