Hey Everybody! I have a question. When I look at internet coin stores and I see a AU-53 1883-s Morgan selling for $138, but the Red Book says it's worth $175.Is that a great deal?Should I buy it? I really need to know the tricks of the trade. Here's a pic of the coin. Thanks B12
Me I allways ask myself the following questions 1. Do I realy want It 2. Can I afford It 3. Can I get it cheaper elsewhere Then I decide De Orc
May I ask who that was graded by??? It looks like it was cleaned with a wire brush. I'd wait for an AU that has original surfaces and no deep scratches... they are around.
That price is not way out but watch Ebay for a few days (fav place the 1883 s dollar) see what you think.
B12, IMHO, i would'nt touch that with a 19 foot pole. The coin is deeply scarred, and would not be worth the ugliness for paying that much.
AU-53 It's called "whizzing" :hammer: BTW - The only sure thing about a Redbook price is that it's wrong.
Here you go....DON'T use the Red Book for a price guide....we have posted many times how that it isn't a good price guide...use ended auctions or even the Gray Sheet. I see fingerprints all over that coin...I sure wouldn't buy it....wait and you will be glad. Speedy
SEGS.....I've seen some good coins in their slabs....but few and far between.... I do see that they list any problems that the coin has on the slab...that is nice for the buyer at least. Speedy
I know what whizzing is and I don't believe that is whizzing. Usually whizzing does not leave deep lines or cuts like that coin has. Whizzing will leave a swirl pattern under a loop and the devices usually have buildup around them. Ben
Even if it hadn't been wizzed, it doesn't look AU to me. S mint coins are usually struck well and this appears to have a lot of wear above the ear and on the eagle breast. -- according to my untrained and strictly amateur opinion --
