I picked up a few sets of coins pretty cheaply. The coins are still in the case but some of the cases are scratched up or slightly damaged. I was wondering if its better to leave the coins as is or to crack open the case and place them in individual holders. And in case anybody is wondering what sets I'm talking about here are some pictures.
Since these are not original government packaging, there is no harm in breaking them up if you have albums to put them into. It's completely up to you! keep them in there if you don't have a better place to put them.
If I had one of those sets and I saw some coin I could cherrypick out (valuable) I could get out to send to a tpg and slab, I would. Better value in my opinion.
I bust all those sets up I can get my hands on. If you take a pocket knife under each corner then you can easily pry it open without damaging the case. I've found some pretty nice dates in sets like those. I just swap them out with another and then sell the set for cheap to one of my buddies
Thanks guys. I'm going to crack open all of them, the only ones that might be worth are 2 V nickels, a 1945 and a 1936 S
Whether it is an official Mint set or not is irrelevant. If you collect nickels or quarters or half dollars, but none of the other coins in a set, and you want the coin to submit for grading or just to put in your Dansco, there is no reason to leave the set intact. Sell the rest of them individually if that is the case! Chris
