I really started collecting coins mid-2004. I have put together a nice collection of primarily Jefferson Head full step nickels, also every dollar coin minted since 1921 among others. Exclusively i've used Dansco albums to house many of these. I'm just noticing after three years that many of my best coins that are housed in these albums are getting a brown ring around the edge. I won't even go into what's going on with my Sacajawea's.. ok most are turning dusky brown like an old cent. If this is the fate of all coins trusted to Dansco, then I am not happy about it! Is this common for others?.. Do you do something special to prevent this? I'm sure it's not humidity, my wife is Canadian.. my thermostat is always set at a tepid 55F
Yes, Dansco albums will tarnish your coins. If that's a problem, I'd suggest inert coin flips, PVC-free pocket pages, and a three-ring binder. Good luck!
As stated, yes albums will cause coins to tone. And temperature has nothing to do with humidity - you can have very low temps and still have high humidity.
If you wish to limit the toning that a Dansco causes, they have "Intercept-like" covers that will help. Additionally, you can put the album and cover in a large ziplock or some other airtite packaging with some dessicant. I use both techniques and have Dansco's that have not toned the coins in the slightest in four years, and I live in humid Florida not far from the ocean....Mike
Friend Leadfoot, what are these covers you're talking about? are they a desecant page? Thanks, Douglas
