I've read about short sets a few times in COINage magazine, and I'm not sure what they are. I mean, I know that it is a partial selection from a type set. But how are the dates in a short set determined? Or can I make up my own?
Short sets are usually the last few years in a given series. Standing Liberty Quarter short sets are 1925 through 1930 Mercury Dimes are usually 1940 through 1945 Washington Quarters, Walking Liberty Halves, Buffalo Nickels and Lincoln Cents along with others also have short sets available. Usually the key dates are early in the series, leaving the ability to arrange a set possible.
Hi, I am working on a MS 64 Walker short set now, as National said this is the last 7 years of the set I am doing. It is a way to assemble a set without getting involved with all the keys, affordable on the most part. regards Tony
Right -- with Walkers the short set is usually 1941-1947. There's also a "long short set" or "medium set" that goes from 1934-1947.
I don't really think there are any specific set dates to collect for a short set. It could be any date of any particular coin you chose. Here are some examples. 1) A decade set, for example 1960 to 1969. You could get all the dates and or mintmarks of a single coin series or all the coin series for that time period. 2) You could have year sets as well. Maybe there is a specific event that took place like a birth or graduation. 3) Perhaps just a small group of a few consecutive dates and or mintmarks of the coin series you wish to collect. These are just some examples. Hope this helps. David
