If your not interested in, or can't financially complete a series of coins, I understand that completing a "Short Set" is the way to go. I know that in Mercury Dimes the short set is 1941-1945.

My question is, what are the Short Sets of other US coins? Would Jeffersons be the Silvers? What about Buffalos, or Roosevelt dimes? Is there a short set of Large Cents or Half Cents?

If someone with more knowledge than me could post any collected short sets for all denominations, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanx...

I think a set is anything you want it to be, I collect for the joy of it above all else so I define my own set parameters typically. For example, if I wanted to create a "short set" for a series because I didn't have the financial backing to complete a "whole set" I might consider doing a date set...down the road I could try and complete it if I had the money. That, or perhaps a mint mark set (for example...Morgan Dollars would contain 5 of these) is also a possibility. Personally, if I was "not interested" in a set I simply wouldn't collect it.

An inexpensive way to go is collect a set of circulated moderns through roll searching. You will also find older things and still get the thrill of the hunt. I put together a bu set of lincoln memorial cents (Minus -s's) this way and found wheaties ...etc. Whatever you don't need, you take back and start again. Face value Plus time is all you are in to. Also maybe type sets would interest you. One of each kind of dime, nickel etc. or maybe a date set. All coins from 1923 or war issues.

    Badger:
    Buffalos: short set 1934- 1938
    Jeffs: War Nick set. 1942-1945
    Roosies: 1946- 1964
I am sure that there are others.

I can sympathize Badger. Generally speaking, I don't have any desire to collect complete date/mintmark sets or even type sets. One "short set" I have collected are the silver roosevelt dimes 1946-64. Other than that, I collect single coins that are interesting to me in some way. The hobby has never really developed standard short set definitions and there is a lot of room for development in this area. In the meantime, you'll have to define your own short set.
