Ok I'm not sure how many of you have delved into the Standling Liberty series. But even as a kid I tended to avoid these as the prices were always "inflated". Now I shopping for one for my type set. Of course the type 1 in either date is a key date coin, so more inflation. This is my 4th or 5th attempt to aquire a type 1 and as with the previous attempts I've found a wall.. right up to about 200/xf a full assortment of coins at and below list exist. At that point, AU and above jump too 400 for coins worthy of the grade. The few AU coins you can find near list price are either "detail" coins or xf sliders just not worth the money. The actual AU coins worthy of the grade are generaly asking (and selling at auction) for MS money.. On the other hand once your in MS the prices go through the roof... I could see this on a rare coin, but the 1917 SLQ type 1 is an "R-4 to R-6" in MS conditions according to TPGs and even the redbook... Sorry NO IT AIN'T I call BS and Shananagans. There are literaly thousands of em up for auction/sale Far far too many even if all the collectors suddenly decided to sell this coin off for it to be considered a rarity of even R-2....... sorry guys... end rant... on the positive side... since I can't find what I want/like at a price I'm willing to pay I am going ""RAW"" and have decided on a coin that while I believe cleaned is without a doubt UNC, FH and more pleasing to me then any other coin I've seen under 500. (may the person who cleaned it be flayed, even if he did put it in my price range lol) Of course that also means sending it in for grading, but I got a few others about ready to go in now anyway At least I have decided to buy it if the auction doesn't shoot up to 1.2k like the last one did lol.... we'll see in about another 36hours lol... (not sharing a pic yet cause I don't trust some of you goobers )
While not rare, these are popular and always in demand. I struggled to find one when doing my dansco type set before the 2020-2022 market spike. I imagine it's even harder now (at least at a reasonable price). In the end, I picked up a raw example for slightly under $65 (middle of 2020).
I settled for xf for the regular slq (a very nice 1927) so I kinda really want au/ms for type 1... but I keep getting a bloody nose on the prices/auctions... is a tough playground out there for these lol
Ok... calling you goobers was rude, but trust... not happening so here's a partial of the FH don't think that's enough for you to track it down with... (please don't lol)
I don’t collect these, but I have always thought it’s one of the most beautiful US coins ever made. Good luck!
don't get me wrong... money wise the gold is a much better buy... on the other hand it fills no slot in my competitive type set at the same time the money could upgrade 3=5 other coins in my type set for more points, but I'm looking to fill a big hole this time not add to the points besides that if you didn't notice the coin I'm after has a beautiful gold toning/patina https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/363344/
My numismatic interests go back to my paper Route days (1958-1962) where on collection days the albums were hauled out of the closet and slots filled. Yes it was rewarding. It must be noted that at that time there were many SLQs in circulation so finding one for the album wasn’t terribly hard. Fast forward to retirement and I decided to complete the series (except for 1916-P) with G-XF raw examples. Apologies for poor quality photos. Thanks to @mrweaseluv my interest in SLQs has been renewed, so I might look for a slabbed MS example.
I love these T1s. I'm actually in the process of building a grading set of these. So far I have FR02-VF30. Has been fun and a learning experience. My goal was to hit low MS...62-3 but with prices the way they are I may cap around XF
My late brother David Lorenzo spent his entire life collecting nothing but SLQs. He has a complete collection with prices all over the spectrum. Stacks/Bowers at this year's ANA's Conference will auction his collection. All are certified - of course. Take a look. John Lorenzo (Numismatist)
I'm putting together a CAC PCGS 1st Year Type set. Obviously the 1916 wasn't going to happen, so I settled for an AU58FH CAC 1917. Until 2 weeks ago, when I won a 1916 PO01 CAC on eBay. My lowest graded coin, but probably my favorite!
You know what they say; "Buy the best you can afford." I don't mind having a nice example of a coin I want, even if it is labeled "details." Here is the one I have:
1st absoluetly beautiful MM.. Exactly.. I pretty sure the one I'm bidding on is cleaned but it still a fantastic coin (and still not cheap!!! details means crap on SLQs lol)
OK, experts, how would you know this coin is "cleaned" and would carrying this a few days in a pocket keep it "AU" but obliterate the effects of the cleaning?
