Thought I would start a thread on sometime not so funny things heard on these coin promotion stations. With that said, here is the first one:

The rep for HSN coins made the following remark: errors always occur after the coin have been minted! DAAAaaaaa  Feb 9, 2005

We've all heard this one several times.

"These could quite possibly be the rarest coin(s) ever made! Today and today only, we are offering only 1,000 GEM BU examples of them to lucky buyers!" ;)

"It costs $30 to get a coin graded" when talking about certified statehood quarters.

    No, it doesn't...
ICG charges $12 for "modern crap", ANACS is $7 (or $9, don't remember) for modern coins

"Buy these highest graded clad proof state quarter set, graded by the number 1, best grading company in the world (icg) proof70 DCAM for $1449.90". (Heres the killer line)--"Now remember, to slab all 30 of these coins cost $30.00 each, or a TOTAL OF $900.00 IN GRADING FEES ALONE!!.

"With that said, the coins will only cost you $549.90 plus shipping and handling"--blah blah blah--

Whata bunch of buffalo chip-- :p

I take it you don't like modern coins?
    Why?
I think some are very neat and pretty...what coins are modern to you??
Some collectors think Franklin halves are modern and I think they are one of the best there is...

The term "modern crap" comes from another discussion board, where a lot of collectors seem to think that a coin has to be at least 100 years old to be worth collecting. I guess I misused the phrase here. Sorry 'bout that.

99% of my collection is from 1990 and later, so I do like "modern crap" :D

You don't need to be sorry I was just wondering...
Some 100 year old coins are not worth much over face value....
I would guess my collection is both...

I'm with you on the Franklin Halves, Speedy. They are designed nicely and they look like they have some "heft" to them. I also think it's neat that the Liberty Bell was designed on the reverse and then at the last moment they realized that coin denominations 25-cents and above must have an eagle on it (so they added the little eagle). Nothing like a nice Franklin, except for a nice Buffalo Nickel which, if you haven't already guessed, I'm partial to... :)

Speedy, can I ask you what this has to do with the title of the thread; "Shoping Network fun and games."?

Well as you can see I had a question about one of the posts in this thread and this seemed like the place to ask...

    Sorry about that ;)

I don't actively collect the Ike's or the SBA's. In my opinion, neither design is very captivating, so they don't hold my attention for long. However, I do collect the SAC's. I think it's a beautiful coin, in fact, I think the reverse of the SAC is one of the most beautiful designs to appear on modern U.S. coinage in a long, long time. I wish the striking had been a little deeper, though, in order to really bring out its texture. Compare the striking of a Morgan Dollar with a SAC. The SAC is extremely flat. I suppose the Mint does this to increase the life of the die.

OOOPS! Please forgive me, Old Dan. To keep the spirit of this thread alive, let me add, "And they don't appear to be selling any of the SAC's on the Shopping Networks or error SAC's AFTER they were minted". How's that? :)

No problem Okc, but you must not watch much of the Shopping network, which I don't blame you any.
They do try and peddle the Sacagawea gold dollars on the program, and have offered them in complete sets from the day they were first minted (2000) to just last year (2004). they have put them in ICG slabs and advertise them for somewhere around $375 per set (P, D, & S). They point out that you as an individual can't buy these coins from just anyone, but must deal directly with the federal government. Reason given was that they were not being released except for special programs such as the one they were running. Just a lot of garbage for the individual who don't keep up on this sort of thing.

They even had a gold plated Sacagawea dollar minted in the year 2000 but with the P mint mark ( not the W) which was never released to the public as only 12 were made. They sure mix the facts with the fiction to complete the sale.

-the way they play the "five pay or three pay" game.. . .
They might state the full price once, but then they always refer to the price of the first payment as the price. Then that "locks you in."
    Locked in indeed.
