Picked this baby up over the weekend. Def some cracks and maybe a clash.. not quite sure but opinions on grade welcome as always. I might have paid too much but couldnt leave it behind. Thanks for looking!
Yeah, Im not sure that i do either lol. But what im looking at that looks off is the marks off the tip of the leaf at 4-5 oclock on the obv. doesnt really look like a die crack there to me but i guess it could be
A very nice Au 1866 shield, this repunched date is very common one. I see more of these then other varieties 66 shields. Notice the last 6 is larger then the first, I will have to warn you these fan become very habit forming . This week alone I have purchased 4! If you are into variety collecting this is where it's at. There are more varieties not found in shield nickels then are already known. The next best thing they are one of the lease appreciated US coins....no not a bad thing for the shield collector . As that keeps prices down, inventory high and best of all you finding more varieties . Nice pick up... Be sure to check out shieldnickels.net for a ton of data on this series .
That's a die crack looking at this coin I say about 2/3's through its run. Remember shields were a hard coin to strike. Nickel, copper thicker platchet then today's nickels. Dies only lasted around 10,000 strikes before the exploded.
I see what your seeing it seems to follow the die crack line then takes a 90 turn up. And at 7:00 in the center of that leaf I see the same type of line down.
I saw that the 6 was bigger but didnt know it was an RPD. Even better! and yeah they dont seem match anything on the rev just dont quite look like the other cracks.
Have a look at the 1883 I just posted in US coins. A very rare 83/2 variety . If you start reading about these nickels you will be hooked .
Here's what your nickel looked like at the end of the run. notice the machine doubling {date} as well as the ball is now flat. This coin was near the end of the dies life.
Cherry pickers guide , there's also a book out of print on Shields and Liberty nickels. I believe it's the complete guide of the above. Shield nickels .net is a great source of information.
This is what you want to look for when picking shields. One is an 1867 DDO the other a 68 DDO the cross and anulet doubled.
Yup I look at shields and half dime every show . Like I said I have purchased 4 shields this week. I'm waiting on 3 now to show up.
