I just caught an episode of Pawn Stars that had a 1867 rays PF 66 * cameo (I think ) mintage of 25, and supposedly they took the bars off, from around the stars, because it too closely resembled the Confederacy's logo

That's not true it was because of strike issues.....and the hardness of the new alloy they were using.

Well, that's what the hillbilly on Pawn Stars claimed....
I DO recall reading that it was because of the new nickel alloy , and strike issues now that U mention it

You can't believe everything you hear on TV. If that was the case I have my own TV show and tell you all that to save your souls you MUST send me all your coins. :)

I have a friend who owns 2 of them. PR63 and PR65 CAM. But the 65 cam is a restrike, and experts now think the 25 mintage was in reference to the prototype reverse or "pattern reverse" 1867 no rays proof, and that there are many more than 25 of the proof rays 1867's around.

A very interesting topic nonetheless, mint records and rumors from this era ( especially concerning proof coinage) seem to be more folk lore than fact it would seem
