Hey all! I have a *New thread called...... "Shield Nickel Saturday!" Please post your Shield Nickels. Thanks and Enjoy.... I have 3 shield nickels from my collection. These are "Variety" coins. All are 1868 but are different. "There are 5 varieties plus a transitional sub-category, of the reverses of the 1868 Shield nickels are distinguished by a certain number of broken letters. To ID "The Reverse of 1868 varieties, simply look at the star at 12:00. If the Star points to the "E" of States, it is the MORE common "reverse of 1867". If it Points to the first "S" in States, then it's the less common Variety. I have here the Variety 3 (FS903), Variety 4 (FS904) and the (Variety 5.5 (FS906) graded by ANACS as a VF30 ). Here is the write up in The CherryPicker's Guide also:
An 1876 Doubled Die I have I thought it was 1876 DDO 5C FS-102? I know nothing of it's rarity or value but the grade isn't too shabby. I suppose it is XF45 maybe a little better? I cherry picked it as a normal 1876 seeing the doubling. Whether that is a big deal or not I don't know but I thought it might be better being a DDO.
