After not posting here for many years, I reviewed a lot of shield nickel posts and found a number of points of confusion and/or misinformation.

I posted a couple comments about this before I thought about it and realized:

    1) There may not be anybody still reading old posts.
    2) There may not be any interest in my comments on them.
    3) It is tedious for me to review years of posts.

So, I thought it perhaps would be more efficient to ask forum participants if there are any shield nickel threads on which you would like input from me. If so, please post a link to the thread here and what you would like input on, and I will try to get to as many of them as I can.

If you think this is not a good way for me to approach this, feel free to leave a comment to that effect as well. My intention is only to share what I know, but my feelings will not be hurt if my input is unwanted.

    Regards to all,
    Howard Spindel

P.S. I am not sure if it is okay to post a link to my shield nickel website here. It is non-commercial, and I don't make a dime off it (in fact, it costs me money to maintain). Most of you probably know what it is, but I'll wait for some kind of okay before posting it.

I don't think anyone would have any issues with you posting a link to your site, Howard. It's actually a pretty interesting place to visit. :) Welcome back. You must be one of the founding fathers of this site........

Hello Howards, I don't have any thing to contribute to the topic. I would be very interested in reading and adding to my files/library what you may have on Shield Nickels. When my section of the hobby gets slow, I sit back and enjoy reading about other opportunities. If others read this, is there a personal message option that I can use?

@tibor: there is lots of reading material on my site. The errata page has a list of good books on shield nickels at the bottom.

Thanks for the kind messages, all.

Messages that you want to send to me alone may be sent to my email address at the bottom of the website. But I encourage posting here - others may learn from your questions.

Welcome and post away on any shield nickel thread you might find - I might learn more from your posts. I do have a question - how rare are the missing leaf varieties? I looked for years before finally finding some of them. I have to see if I can find pictures of my most favorite shield nickel. :)

My favorite 1867-DDO with wide repunched date.

In the aggregate, missing leaf varieties are scarce but not at all rare. By that I mean diligent searching is likely to turn up a small number of opportunities per year. (A rare variety is one I have to look for for 10 years to find!)

But if you change the question to "how rare is a particular missing leaf die," that is an entirely different question. If you are searching for a particular variety, it may well take years to find it.

You possibly already know this: this variety catalogs as FS-002.4, F-09, S1-7000.

I consider varieties that show both a strong DDO and a strong RPD to be highly desirable and a I call them "twofers."

You can find more twofers here:

PS - I have had your site book marked for years. I am always jumping out to look at it - mainly I hope to cherry pick an 83/2 one of these days.

It is quite feasible to cherrypick an 83/2. I have done so several times.
