Yep, it's a devil's head. Value about $40 to $50 in that condition.

I've always been curious why they are called devils head. And also, does the Queen know about this and does she mind?

The one's to find are the replacement bills with an asterisk. If this $20 had had an asterisk, it would have been worth a couple of thousand dollars.

That's a great link for the explanation for the devil. But why did nobody ever object to the sleeping form above her left eye in the original and modified styles?

dt menace, wow ive been looking at pictures for years, and only yesterday could i see it. although i dont think ive ever seen that cutout pic.

ikandiggit, replacement notes with an asterisk would be no devil right?

coinmaster, thank you. i was about 15 or 16, and knew i should hold on to it.

    me no chewy this note

hey thaivic, you reminded me of this. see the "naked lady" lying on the top of the can? the ice sticking up from the can from right to left is, a foot, a thigh, a shoulder, and then hair hanging down the can. see it?

not to mention the other subliminal advertising. if you look at the word coke on its side like this...
the right side of the c is a jaw, while the loop at the top of the c is an ear. the o is a nose. the l and a together form a hat. and the swish going through it at the top is a feather in the hat, and at the bottom is a line of coke going into the nose.

i know, its supposed to be about coins but just thought i would share this 90's vending machine pic. there must have been a reason you put your dollar in there everyday, lol. theres supposed to be another naked girl in the ice but i dont see it.

    hey wazzappening
Definitely see the naked lady at the top, as for the other? Could that be at the bottom left, head thrown back, flowing hair again but could lose some weight from the tummy?. Or is it just my depraved imagination? Oh and I also notice a small furry rodent eyeing her lasciviously from the top of the ice, lower right hand side.
Just got to stop drinking so much of that stuff and stick to something safer...like beer!

The "devil's face" were replaced (they were removed from circulation when they got back to the bank) the same basic design was then issued with a modified hair style. The originals (1954 issue only) fetch higher prices than the modified ones. They also ran the complete range from $1 to $1,000.
The new design, although dated 1954 ran from 1955 up to 1974.

(What do you mean no subliminal advertising on beer cans? Of course there is... when your hitting the third slab!)

k sorry but i have to put this here. i have proof that ms. liberty is also affiliated with the devil. so i was researching peace dollar weights. wiki says the silver content weighs 0.77344 troy ounces. so what? put it in your calculator and turn it upside down.
