The San Bernardino County Sheriff Dept has requested identification of this coin and it's value for an up coming unclaimed property auction. I can't seem to find it. Any help will be appreciated. Thx, Joe
No guarantee the coin is genuine, the legends are different and the design is a bit different that others I have seen. That doesn't mean it isn't genuine, but it's a possibility. As for value, here's one for sale - but it is different than the example you posted. Personally, I think that's a bit high. http://www.rarecoincollector.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=40&products_id=7962
Yes I know, but like I stated earlier the coin is in the lock-up and I can't get to it. What info they have given me is what I've shared here. I don't have a catalogue for the time period of this coin. Assuming it's the size of a crown, we can determine that it's weight is similar to other issues of that period that are about the same size, minus here and there, and that it's probably 0.9000 silver or so. I'm hoping that someone knowledgeable in Spanish coinage from this period may be able to attribute it or at least point me in the right direction.
Thx GDJMSP. I'll send this info to the sheriff's dept. They just wanted a general idea of what the coin is and what it may be worth. There were some burglaries in the Redlands, Ca. area and one of the burglars caught had this on him at the time of arrest. The people of this area are well to do and those collectors who were burglarized had many nice collections of foreign crowns and American Morgans that may have been stolen. But so far this coin has not been claimed along with some others. This is the last one that needs attribution after which they will hold a public auction.
I don't have the books to it up for you either. But they said it's about the size of an Ike, an Ike is 38mm, the 2 reales is 32mm. So it's reasonable it is a 2 reales. Personally, I've never seen one like the one you show. They are all like the one linked to. That is enough to make me worry that it's fake. That's is about all I can do for you.
Actually - I'd say it is a 4 Reales, from the Sevilla mint (thus the S - IIII on the obverse). The picture isn't quite clear enough for me to make out the orientation. But I suppose that "SPAIN, Ferdinand and Isabella. AR 4 Reales. Seville mint" should be enough. I would lean heavily towards genuine, but it is of course hard to tell from the pics. Hope this helps!
Yeah but the Seville mint has a Spanish cross at 12 o'clock above the arrows. The OP's coin has a sunburst. And the legends are different.
Usually this is true. This type, Cayon 2808(with an I near arrow points) does not have the cross. *REX REGINA CAST LEGION ARAGO SI Legends and design are far enough off that I don't think it's real. See an example 5th from the bottom here: http://www.maravedis.net/rrcc_4realespag.html
