Since I'm now dealing with Large Cents, I'm running into Sheldon numbers, Cohen numbers and Newcomb numbers as variety identifiers. They are different reference systems for date/die varieties BUT it looks like the same coin may be included in two separate systems. Do I have that correct? If so, is there a cross-reference that covers those situations?
You are mixing die variety numbers with different series. Sheldon numbers cover early large cents from 1793 to 1814. Newcomb numbers cover middle and late date large cents from 1816 to 1857. Cohen numbers cover half cents from 1793 to 1857 with the great rarities, mostly in the 1840s excepted.
Many thanks for straightening my understanding out. At my age things are becoming more difficult. I'll just have to move along more slowly.
Why no 1815 Large Cents? Don't cha know there's a war on??? Sucks when your provider is on the other side. Sorry, can we hold off on this battle so we can get more cent planchets for our Large Cents???
